What makes up the price
For context on why legitimate packages cost what they do, here's where the money goes:
- National park permit — the park charges a per-person entry fee plus an environmental levy. These are mandatory and non-negotiable, and they make up a significant portion of the package cost.
- Guide fee — licensed local guides are certified by the national park authority. Certification has a cost, and experienced guides charge accordingly.
- Porters — every ethical trekking operator employs local Sembalun and Senaru porters at fair wages. A typical group of 2 needs 2–3 porters.
- Camping equipment — quality 4-season tents, sleeping bags rated for summit conditions, and cooking equipment are significant ongoing investments.
- Food — all meals for the whole group, prepared by the porter team on the mountain, for 2–3 days.
- Trekking insurance — mandatory under national park regulations.
Why cheap packages should raise a red flag: Any Rinjani package offered for under Rp 1,500,000 per person cannot realistically cover all of the above. Common shortcuts include unlicensed guides, missing insurance, outdated camping equipment, or fees added separately at the gate. The lowest legitimate price for a genuinely all-inclusive package is around Rp 2,000,000–2,200,000.
How much to tip your guide and porters
Tips are not included in the package and are entirely voluntary — but they make a real difference to the people who carry your camp, cook your food and get you safely up the mountain.
A widely used guideline:
- Guide: Rp 50,000–100,000 per trekker per day
- Each porter: Rp 30,000–50,000 per trekker per day
For a group of 2 on a 3-day trek with 1 guide and 2 porters, that's roughly Rp 600,000–900,000 in tips total — shared between the team. Bring cash in small denominations (Rp 20,000 and Rp 50,000 notes).
Other costs to budget for
- Getting to Lombok — flight from Bali (~Rp 300,000–500,000 one way), or fast boat (~Rp 350,000).
- Hotel in Lombok — you'll arrive the day before your trek. Budget Rp 150,000–400,000 per night depending on comfort level. (Hotel transit the night before is included in our package.)
- Trekking gear rental — if you need to rent boots, poles or a jacket, allow Rp 50,000–150,000 per item.
- Personal travel insurance — don't skip this. A policy covering mountain trekking and emergency evacuation costs USD 20–50 for a short trip.
Total budget per person — realistic estimate
| Item | Budget estimate |
| Trek package (3D2N) | Rp 3,000,000 |
| Tips (guide + porters) | Rp 300,000–450,000 |
| Hotel pre-trek (1 night) | Rp 200,000–400,000 |
| Snacks on trail | Rp 50,000–100,000 |
| Travel insurance | Rp 300,000–700,000 |
| Total | ~Rp 3,850,000–4,650,000 |
For a solo trekker doing the 3D2N, a realistic all-in budget (excluding flights to Lombok) is around Rp 4–4.5 million.
Common questions
How much does a Rinjani trek cost?
A licensed, all-inclusive package costs Rp 2,600,000 for the 2D1N summit trek or Rp 3,000,000 for the 3D2N full crossing per person. This includes guide, porters, all meals, camping equipment, national park permit and insurance. Budget additionally for tips, personal travel insurance and any gear rental.
Why are some Rinjani packages much cheaper?
Very cheap packages cut corners somewhere — unlicensed guides, no insurance, poor equipment or hidden fees added at the gate. The national park permit alone costs a significant portion of the total fee. A legitimate all-inclusive package cannot ethically be offered below roughly Rp 2,000,000.
How much should I tip?
Tips are not included and are greatly appreciated. A common guideline: Rp 50,000–100,000 per trekker per day for the guide, Rp 30,000–50,000 per trekker per day for each porter. For a 3D2N trip for two, that's roughly Rp 600,000–900,000 total, split between the team.
Is the hotel transit included?
Yes — the hotel transit the night before the trek starts is included in every package. You don't need to arrange separate accommodation for that night.
