July and August give the clearest skies and the most reliable summit sunrises. Here's the full picture — month by month, from guides who trek this mountain year-round.
July and August are the best months to trek Rinjani. The dry season is at its peak, trails are firm, mornings are clear and the summit sunrise is spectacular. Book at least 3–4 weeks ahead if you're targeting those months — it's the busiest period on the mountain.
The national park is open from April to December. Outside of those peak months, the earlier and later parts of the season are worth considering if you want fewer people on the trail.
| Month | Weather | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January–March | Rainy season | — | 🚫 Park closed |
| April | Drying out, occasional showers | Low | OK — trails still soft in places |
| May | Mostly dry, some cloud | Low–Medium | ✓ Good shoulder month |
| June | Dry, clear mornings | Medium | ✓✓ Very good — fewer crowds than peak |
| July | Very dry, clearest skies | High | ⭐ Best month overall |
| August | Very dry, clearest skies | High | ⭐ Best month overall |
| September | Dry, slightly more cloud | Medium | ✓✓ Excellent — crowds easing |
| October | Mostly dry, occasional shower | Low–Medium | ✓ Good, book early |
| November | Rainy season approaching | Low | ⚠️ Unpredictable, sunrise odds drop |
| December | Rainy season starts | Low | ⚠️ Possible, but risky |
These two months are when Rinjani is at its best. The southeast trade winds keep the air clear, humidity is low and mornings on the summit are spectacularly crisp. You're most likely to see the sunrise spread across Lombok, Sumbawa and a full sea of clouds from 3,726 metres.
The downside: these are also the busiest months. Campsites on the crater rim fill up and the trail on Day 2 sees more foot traffic. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider June or September instead.
For many trekkers, June and September offer the best balance. The weather is still excellent, the trails are dry and there are noticeably fewer groups on the mountain. You'll still get great summit conditions on most days.
September is especially good value — the dry season has been running for months, the trails are well-worn in, and the crowds from July–August have thinned out significantly.
The park reopens in April after the rainy season closure. April can be wet underfoot and parts of the trail are slippery from recent rainfall. By May things are drying nicely and it's a reasonable time to go, especially if your dates don't allow for the peak months. Expect some cloud at the summit in the early morning.
The park remains open in November and December, but this is when the rainy season begins to push in from the northwest. Rain makes the volcanic sand trails on the summit ridge slippery and summit visibility becomes unreliable. We can still run treks in these months, but we'll always be honest with you about the conditions — a cloudy summit is still a remarkable experience, but it's worth knowing the odds before you book.
Rinjani sits at 3,726 metres. Regardless of what month you trek, the summit push (starting around 2 AM) will be cold. July nights on the crater rim regularly drop to 5–8°C, and wind chill on the summit can make it feel closer to 0°C. Pack warm layers no matter what time of year you go.
For July and August treks, we recommend booking at least 3–4 weeks in advance — permits are in high demand and can sell out, especially over weekends. For all other months, 1–2 weeks is usually enough, but the earlier you confirm your dates the better.
